Session DescriptionWho says scientists don't need to be creative? Studying ocean animals can be hard! To learn about the lives of animals like sharks, sea turtles, and dolphins scientists have had to create new technologies and ways to study them - or film them. Join Dr. Mike Heithaus and Patrick Greene as they take you on a journey of discovery.
They will tell stories about the cool technologies they have used to unravel the inner workings of ecosystems and study and film the oceans' most incredible predators. Cameras animals wear, 360 cameras, ridiculous shark cages, shark lollipops and a jello dolphin are just some of the tools they have used. Some have been incredible successes. Some, not so much. Woven into the stories of these successes - and failures - you will hear about how scientists ask and answer questions to reveal insights that are critical to protecting our oceans and the animals that call them home. -
About Dr. Mike HeithausMike Heithaus, Ph.D., is a professor of Biology and Executive Dean of the College of Arts, Sciences & Education at Florida International University. A marine ecologist specializing in predator-prey interactions, Dr. Heithaus has published over 200 scientific articles and edited five books, as well as coauthored multiple K-12 textbooks and science programs.
As an internationally renowned science communicator, Dr. Heithaus has hosted or appeared in more than 40 documentary films, including Discovery’s Shark Week and National Geographic’s SharkFest. He can be found studying sharks and other marine creatures in remote corners of the world or speaking to kids and their teachers at K-12 schools across the United States.
The STEM of Things: Traditional Crafts Uncovered

Session DescriptionStudents will explore the fascinating intersection of craftsmanship and STEM through the lens of the Emmy Award-winning Made with Love television series. Presented by the series’ creator and director, Patrick Greene, this engaging session will use real-world examples from artisan communities around the globe to uncover the hidden science, technology, engineering, and math behind traditional crafts—such as the chemistry of natural dyes in textiles, the physics of pottery firing and glass blowing, and the geometry involved in globe design and guitar making.
Through captivating video segments from the series and interactive discussions, students will discover how centuries-old techniques are deeply rooted in the same STEM principles they study in the classroom—offering a fresh perspective on both innovation and cultural heritage. -
About Patrick GreenePatrick Greene is a biologist-turned-filmmaker who has filmed wildlife and scientific research across the globe. As a multi-Emmy Award-winning producer, he specializes in science programming and educational media, with his work featured on major networks including Disney+, Apple TV+, Nat Geo, PBS, and Discovery Channel. Driven by a passion for education, Patrick has produced over 500 educational videos, covering subjects from elementary science and high school biology and chemistry to middle and high school math, reaching millions of students in classrooms across the United States.
As a Director and Executive Producer, he has contributed to over 100 productions, helping scientists bring their discoveries to the public and capturing the artistry and craftsmanship of artisans worldwide.
